Monthly Tips

This month we are focusing on organization. A New Year sometimes needs new surroundings, or just less stuff.  These are just the basics to get you started. For more in depth information, check out my Seven Layers of Organization book. It is available at larger bookstores and libraries. Remember, you can do it!

Seven Layers of Organization

Layer 4: Sort & Contain

Here, we separate the utilitarian from the decorative, and the things you don’t want to see from those you do. This will give you a clear idea of what needs to be contained and how you’ll contain it. In this section, drawers and closets are repurposed to contain the stuff you simply can’t live without.

At this point, everything you don’t want, don’t need, and shouldn’t have should be gone. Congratulations!

Now that you have made space in closets and drawers and on shelves, you can actually see the stuff that needs to be sorted and contained. Your goal in this layer is to sort the remaining piles of stuff into two categories: what will be stored out of sight and what will be stored visibly.

Here is a list of out of sight items, it is meant to give a general idea:

  • Power tools
  • Toilet paper
  • Pampers

These are things that are unpleasant to look at. There is a container out there waiting for them.

Visible and decorative storage is for the items you don’t mind seeing---items that, if contained decoratively, can actually enhance the look and feel of a room.

Here’s a tip: By using your imagination and looking at the colors and textures of everyday items in a whole new way, you can reserve the precious space. The next time you’re out shopping take a look at the displays in the apothecary, clothing and gift shops. They use clever trick you can do at home too.  Like rolling towels and displaying them on a ledge or in a basket.
