Monthly Tips

This month we are focusing on organization. A New Year sometimes needs new surroundings, or just less stuff.  These are just the basics to get you started. For more in depth information, check out my Seven Layers of Organization book. It is available at larger bookstores and libraries. Remember, you can do it!

Seven Layers of Organization

Layer 1: Assess & Schedule

This layer is designed to get you mentally ready to change your life. Here, the whole house, from attic to basement, needs to be assessed for you to have a clear picture of what the job at hand really entails. This prevents the domino effect, where every room is torn up at the same time and you become helplessly overwhelmed. With a clear vision, realistic timeline, and workable budget, you’re ready for the next layer.

Assess every room, every drawer, closet…you get the idea, and don’t spend more than an hour in each room. Talk out loud about the items, there is great power in the spoken word.

While you're assessing, make notes of the following:

  • Anything you have duplicates of
  • Boxes or containers that you haven't looked in for more than a year
  • Clothing you haven’t worn in more than a year
  • “Collections” that consist of one item
  • Things that you’ve been meaning to toss out but haven’t
  • Things that don’t work and haven’t for more than a year
  • Things you thought you’d use but haven’t
  • Damaged or chipped items you still use
  • Items tucked away in the closets
  • Any medication or food that has expired

Now give yourself a day or so to review the list and let it sink in. And don’t worry about having nothing left if you get rid of so much. Remember, the idea is to open up space for new possibilities. You’re about to make room for a new exciting life. Yippee!
