If you can dream it, you can DO it! Christopher has compiled an assortment of his classic demos. In each, he simplifies the more overwhelming aspects of home design and presents an easy-to-follow guideline for the do it yourselfer.
Cabana Closet From a Pot Rack
This demo, shown here behind the Lion Cage Storage Unit, is from the Who Knew? The Art of Being Clever show.
Materials:
- Steel half-circle wall-mounted pot rack
- Velcro (adhesive-backed and stitch-on)
- Decorator fabric
- Wall-mounted clothes rack
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Marker
- Sewing machine
- Pins
Apply adhesive-backed Velcro to the top and front rails of the pot rack.
Make a pattern by measuring the pie-shaped sections between the steel structure pieces. Add an inch for seam allowances. Cut out four pieces from fabric, forming a cover for the dome.
Place two fabric sections right sides together and stitch the seam along one side of the pie shape. Continue adding pie-shaped fabric sections, stitching them together.
The stitched sections form the cover for the cabana over the domed pot rack.
Cut a straight length of fabric the same measurement as the half circle at the bottom of the pot rack for a valance.
Scallop the bottom edge or cut into points. Duplicate the strip and stitch both pieces with right sides together along the trimmed edge. Turn right side out.
Hem the raw edges of the scallops by turning he edge under and stitching it, or use an iron-on fusible web product.
With right sides together, pin the canopy to the cover of the cabana with the bottom edge of the cabana meeting the top edge of the canopy.
Cut two fabric panels the desired length to create the cabana flaps. Panels can go all the way to the floor if you choose. Add a 1-inch allowance for the hem and top seam. Hem the sides and bottom edge. With the right side of the panels facing the wrong side of the canopy, pin the top edge to the pinned edge of the canopy. Stitch the three pieces of fabric together.
Stitch Velcro into the inside of the fabric dome, matching the locations of the steel rails. Adhere the opposite portion of the Velcro to the steel rails of the domed pot rack. Press the Velcro pieces together, forming the cabana with flaps. Attach the pot rack to the wall using the supplied hardware. Mount a clothes rack to the wall behind the canopy for hanging backpacks, clothes or whatever you wish.
