DEMOS

If you can dream it, you can DO it! Christopher has compiled an assortment of his classic demos. In each, he simplifies the more overwhelming aspects of home design and presents an easy-to-follow guideline for the do it yourselfer.

Cast Concrete Candlesticks

Dennis Luebke demonstrates creative ways to use foam insulation, cardboard and HydroCal to make beautiful candleholders. These were featured in the show entitled Who Knew? The Art of Being Clever.

Materials:

  • Foam insulation board (4'x 8' x 1/4
  • Plastic food containers
  • HydroCal
  • Water
  • Coffee grounds
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  1. Take a foam insulation board that measures 4'x8' x 1

  2. Using the same technique, make a second mold for the base of the candleholder. By placing foam pieces inside the mold you can form spaces for the HydroCal to fill and create legs for the candleholder.

  3. Mix HydroCal with water according to package directions, mix in coffee grounds, and pour the mixture into the first mold. Let harden. The mold pictured forms the top of the candleholder.

  4. Add HydroCal to the base mold of the candleholder and let harden.

  5. Break away the foam insulation to reveal the HydroCal candlestick top.

  6. Break away the insulation form to reveal the base of the candlestick.

  7. For an easy version, cut strips of 1/4-inch-thick foam and hot glue them to the inside of a plastic food container. Mix HydroCal with water, add coffee grounds, and pour the combined ingredients into the mold. Let harden. Then remove from the mold.

  8. Use your imagination to come up with different and unusual shapes. For example, embed objects into the HydroCal to add dimension.
